10 Facts about the Polar Bear Plunge

Your pool might be pretty cold, but is it as cold as the Northern oceans?  On New Year's Day, thousands of swimmers took the Polar Bear Plunge into freezing water.

Are they nuts? Plunging into water at 8 degrees Celsius (46 F) or colder!  Perhaps they are, but people have been known to do stranger things

Winter Pool Operations in the No Snow Zone

Denis-e-mail.jpgMany Solar-Breeze owners live in the No-Snow Zone.  We welcome cooler temperatures but can still have dinner outside by the pool.

Winter brings shorter days, and less direct solar rays.  When the sun hits pholtovoltaic panels at an angle of less than 90 degrees, they still function to turn solar energy into an electrical current, however the amount of current produced is less.  For the Solar-Breeze, this means shorter operating times as less energy is produced during the day and less charge is available on the battery during the night.

Storing your Solar-Breeze for the Winter

In parts of the world where pools are closed for the winter, there is a fall routine you go through to clean, close and cover your swimming pool.  If you are using a Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer to keep your summer pool sparkling clean, then you have one more task.   Clean, dry and store the Solar-Breeze so that next summer you can again have a trouble free, sparkling clean pool.

Still Winter - Still Water

Winter pools have a tendency to become algae factories.  This is partly because of all the debris blown in by winter storms but mostly because we aren't paying attention.  It's hard to stay motivated when it's too cold to swim.  Sitting by the pool is not very relaxing when all you can see is debris and algae.  So, before it's too late, take an hour and reclaim your pool.

There are a couple of things you can do to avert a major clean up and all the effort and cost associated with battling algae.

Test your water.

  • The correct range for alkalinity is 70 - 140 ppm depending on the type of pool i.e gunite, fiberglass.

  • Your pH should be as close to 7.4 as possible.

  • Chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm will keep the water sanitized.

  • Calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm is appropriate.

Rebalance.  Ask your pool professional what order to add the chemicals.  It matters!

If your particulates are too high, consider softening your pool water by using a Reverse Osmosis service.  Calsaway has a mobile service which will process the water from your pool without having to dump it.  This is a tremendous water savings and will save on chemicals going forward.

Remove organic material.  Starve the algae!  The most efficient way to do this is to remove the debris before it sinks and decomposes in the sunlight.  The Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer will operate for free with energy from the sun.  The solar panels recharge a lithium ion battery to extend the hours Solar-Breeze works to keep your pool sparkling.

Now you can sit back and relax in your chaise lounge.  There is something very restorative about sitting by the pool.  Perhaps it is because the water is still and at rest.  Perhaps because water is so much a part of us. Read More...

Winter is Here

It's pretty chilly in much of the northern hemisphere. Chilly is a subjective term for people but what about your pool robot? 32 degrees F is too chilly for Solar-Breeze. Read More...
