Saltwater vs Chlorine Pool Chemistry - I

People argue that a saltwater pool is more natural and chlorine free.  This is a common misconception.

A salt water pool starts with crystalline Sodium Chloride (think table-salt).  It looks like this.....

The chlorine generator un-bundles the salt to produce Hypochlorous Acid and Sodium Hypochlorite.

Cleaning Your Pool - Part 3 - D.E. Filters

Pools can be “green” in a sustainable way, but they can also be green for all the wrong reasons.  If your pool has been overtaken by algae, you may want to backwash your pool to clear the algae and restore your water quality.  Diatomaceous Earth filters are ideal for clearing out the bad type of green in your pool, and they do so in an eco-friendly way!

Chris Mertsch of CM Pool Service is a Scottsdale AZ pool maintenance expert.  If you are curious about Diatomaceous Earth filters, click on the link below to let Chris explain how they work and what you need to do to keep them working.

You're Gonna Love the Way Your Pool Looks!

Solar-Breeze customers love the way their pools look! It's great to save time hand skimming and money on electricity but the most consistant feedback we get is that their pools sparkle and are always Swim-Ready.

3 Steps to a Clean Pool - Part 2

Algae is your pool's enemy. Before you attack, clean and remove the debris, balance the water chemistry and identify the algae.

3 Steps to a Clean Pool

Clean Your Pool

Large or small, salt water or fresh water, gunite or pebbletec; all pools have a tendency to get dirty.  It's a fact of pools.

There are three steps to having a clean pool, regardless what size or type you may have.

    1. SANITIZE

    1. OXIDIZE

    1. PREVENT ALGAE

A Solar-Breeze robotic solar pool skimmer can help you with steps 1. and 3 and save on electricity in the process.

Over the next couple of weeks, the team at Solar Pool Technologies will go deeper into these three steps.  So stay tuned.

Cool Clear Water

I first heard this song when I was about 10 years old and thought it was really hokey, yet somehow, I still remember it, more than 40 years later.  Cool, Clear, Water resonates in my head.  Now I live in the desert and the backyard swimming pool is our oasis - complete with palm trees.   The last thing I want to do is spend time cleaning the pool.  We have a Solar-Breeze for that!  Instead of skimming the pool, I can just kick back and crank up the tunes - even if some of them are a bit old-school.

Bacteria + Swimming Pools = Bad News

Bacteria and algae are the bane of swimming pool owners.  Once they gain a foothold, it can take hours of your time and buckets of chemicals to return your pool to swimming condition.  Even after the bacteria and algae are controlled, the traces of algaecide and the high levels of chlorine make the water less attractive.

Organic matter laying on the bottom of the pool and exposed to sunlight decays much more quickly than the same organic matter trapped in a Solar-Breeze robotic skimmer.  The combination of sunlight and soaking triggers the bacteria naturally present in plant material to start breaking it down at a higher rate of speed than water alone.

The Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer has a chemical dispenser tray immediately behind the debris basket.  The dispenser fits two 3" chlorine tablets which slowly dissolve, sanitizing the pool as the unit moves through the water.  The Solar-Breeze periodically reverses direction in order to randomize its path and cover the entire pool surface.  While it is 'in reverse' the chlorine is washing over the trapped debris, further inhibiting bacterial growth.

Take a look at How it Works - on our website.  Save money.  Save time.  Have a cleaner pool with less chemicals.

Still Winter - Still Water

Winter pools have a tendency to become algae factories.  This is partly because of all the debris blown in by winter storms but mostly because we aren't paying attention.  It's hard to stay motivated when it's too cold to swim.  Sitting by the pool is not very relaxing when all you can see is debris and algae.  So, before it's too late, take an hour and reclaim your pool.

There are a couple of things you can do to avert a major clean up and all the effort and cost associated with battling algae.

Test your water.

  • The correct range for alkalinity is 70 - 140 ppm depending on the type of pool i.e gunite, fiberglass.

  • Your pH should be as close to 7.4 as possible.

  • Chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm will keep the water sanitized.

  • Calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm is appropriate.

Rebalance.  Ask your pool professional what order to add the chemicals.  It matters!

If your particulates are too high, consider softening your pool water by using a Reverse Osmosis service.  Calsaway has a mobile service which will process the water from your pool without having to dump it.  This is a tremendous water savings and will save on chemicals going forward.

Remove organic material.  Starve the algae!  The most efficient way to do this is to remove the debris before it sinks and decomposes in the sunlight.  The Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer will operate for free with energy from the sun.  The solar panels recharge a lithium ion battery to extend the hours Solar-Breeze works to keep your pool sparkling.

Now you can sit back and relax in your chaise lounge.  There is something very restorative about sitting by the pool.  Perhaps it is because the water is still and at rest.  Perhaps because water is so much a part of us. Read More...
