Solar-Breeze Review from Hawaii

If you don't own one of these great pool skimmers already, get one immediately!

For big pools or small pools, you won't regret it, it saves you time and money and it's fun to watch it work. And wait until you see how efficiently it catches all the dirt, that swims around on the surface of your pool.

I was surprised to see how brave this  little machine is.  Sometimes I find even long pieces of palm tree leaves curled up in its collecting tray.  More than this, the machine's fine mesh filter catches all the tiny unwanted things such as dust, pollen, little bugs and other very small stuff, which you normally cannot even see, how much of it is in your pool and probably causes you allergies, irritations or just contributes massively to the pool's contamination.

And it will last you a long time, because of its sturdy construction and the super friendly and generous customer service, which is really willing to help, no matter what part of the globe you're calling from.

Aloha from Hawaii!  Dan, in the Hawaiian Islands

We love to hear from our customers.  Thank you for your kind words Dan.

Using Solar to Heat your Pool from the Bottom

A few years ago, the Riley family was gathered by the pool, talking science in general and physics in particular.  Braden and Kristin were 9 and 10 at the time when they asked, “Why do people heat a pool from the top when heat rises?”  Great question!

Heat-Snorkel4.jpgSun warms the surface of the water but that heat is easily lost to the air.  Instead of recirculating the warm water from the top 12 inches of the pool, there had to be a way of taking that warm water down to the bottom.  They invented a simple device called the Heat Snorkel.

With this system, the warmed water is pulled through the filter and reintroduced towards the bottom of the pool.  As it rises, it circulates and warms the pool.

The Buzz on Batteries

There is a lot of buzz in the scientific media these days about batteries.  Specifically, what sort of batteries will we use to store wind and solar-generated electricity through long winter nights and cloudy or calm days.

The objective is to build 20MWh battery installations which would be sufficient to supply 2,000 homes for 24-36 hours.  Most of the attention is focussed on REDOX FLOW batteries.  Click on the link to read more about these batteries in Science Daily.

The Solar-Breeze robot uses a Lithium-ion battery. With a combined capacity of 12.5 watts, the unit's solar panels capture enough power during the day to both run the motors AND charge the battery.  As the sun reaches approximately 30 degrees from the Western horizon, Solar-Breeze shifts from operating on solar to operating on battery power.  Depending upon the amount of solar energy available to the panels during the day, the unit can run up to 8 or 9 hours into the evening/night.

The first version of the Solar-Breeze used Nickel-Cadmium batteries but the results were not as consistant or satisfactory as with the current Lithium batteries.  These rechargeable batteries are reliable for at least 1,000 charging cycles (days of use) and can be replaced to extend the working life of your Solar-Breeze.

Bacteria + Swimming Pools = Bad News

Bacteria and algae are the bane of swimming pool owners.  Once they gain a foothold, it can take hours of your time and buckets of chemicals to return your pool to swimming condition.  Even after the bacteria and algae are controlled, the traces of algaecide and the high levels of chlorine make the water less attractive.

Organic matter laying on the bottom of the pool and exposed to sunlight decays much more quickly than the same organic matter trapped in a Solar-Breeze robotic skimmer.  The combination of sunlight and soaking triggers the bacteria naturally present in plant material to start breaking it down at a higher rate of speed than water alone.

The Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer has a chemical dispenser tray immediately behind the debris basket.  The dispenser fits two 3" chlorine tablets which slowly dissolve, sanitizing the pool as the unit moves through the water.  The Solar-Breeze periodically reverses direction in order to randomize its path and cover the entire pool surface.  While it is 'in reverse' the chlorine is washing over the trapped debris, further inhibiting bacterial growth.

Take a look at How it Works - on our website.  Save money.  Save time.  Have a cleaner pool with less chemicals.

Make Friends With Your Neighbors

A frequent comment by visitors to our booth at the Maricopa County Home & Garden Show this weekend is,"My neighbors have these ______ trees that dump all sorts of _____ into my pool.  I can't stand it!  I wish they would just cut them down!!!"

What a strain on neighborhood relations!  Eucalyptus, mesquite and bougainvillea are beautiful but they are pernicious debris-factories.

Don't get mad!  Get a Solar-Breeze and make friends with your neighbors again!

We add two more benefits to operating a Solar-Breeze in your pool.

  • saves your time

  • saves electricity

  • saves money

  • makes efficient use of your sanitizing chemicals

  • keeps your pool sparkling clean

  • HELPS MAINTAIN GOOD NEIGHBORLY RELATIONS

  • SAVES TREES

So, put away the chainsaw and go online to purchase your Solar-Breeze.  Enjoy your neighbors and their shade trees as well. Read More...

How Does a Solar Panel Work?

Pholtovoltaic cells, more commonly known as Solar Panels, are everywhere these days.  They are in big electrical utility installations, on the Solar-Breeze robotic pool skimmer, and on the calculator you carry in your briefcase.  We are very comfortable with Solar Panels but many of us have never even considered how they work.

Kyocera has an excellent educational website called "Solar Power Expo".  In pavillion 4, they explain the science behind the photovoltaic cell.  Follow this link to their website.  http://global.kyocera.com/solarexpo/solar_power/

Sand is processed into very pure silicon.  Impurites are added to specialize the silicon.  Boron is introduced to make P-type silicon  Phosphorus is added to make N-type silicon.  These two types of "doped" silicon  are combined to make a crystal semiconducter which has a permanent electrical field at the junction between the N and P type sections.

When the photons in sunlight hit the semiconductor, electrons are released at the junction and are attracted to the n-type semiconductor. This causes more negative charge  in the n-type semiconductor and more positive charge in the p-type, thus generating a flow of electricity in a process known as the “photovoltaic effect.”  By attaching a wire to both sides, the electron flow can complete its journey from the junction area to the N-type, through the wire, to the P-type and back to the junction, only to do it again and again.

The electricity produced by Solar panels is direct current (DC), which is perfect for the Solar-Breeze.  The electricity used in our homes and offices is alternating current (AC) so the power produced by solar panels is run through an invertor before feeding into the grid.
